Xanthoceras sorbifolium. Native to northern China. A deciduous large bush or small tree, it makes an attractive garden specimen with its feathery leaves and cascades of white flowers with yellow and red centers. The leaves, flowers, and seeds of yellowhorn are all edible, although the older leaves are fibrous and tough. Seeds are best roasted, although some specimens taste good raw as well. In some areas it can reach 25 ft in height, but in NB it is more likely to max out at smaller heights of 10-15 ft or so; this plant is a slow grower, it will take its time to reach maximum height.
Hardy to zone 5, the yellowhorn can thrive in NB, but it requires protection from winter winds. Plant it in a sheltered spot – between other bushes, or next to a shed. Without protection, it will die back to the ground every year and will struggle to grow to its full potential. Two trees are needed for pollination. These are last year's seedlings, <1 ft in height.
