Allium x proliferum. Also known as tree onion or topsetting onions, the walking onions are a perennial type of onions, which have little onion bulblets growing on the top of where other onions have flowers. These little bulblets sprout and grow while still attached to the original stalk. Once the bulblets are large, the stalk bends under the weight, and the bulblets take root some distance from the parent plant, giving rise to the name "walking onions". Young leaves can be used as scallions, and the bulblets can be used similarly to regular onions, or preserved by pickling. Plants are hardy to zone 3, virtually care-free, and self-propagating.

Got two of these. After a couple of years they have made their own patch! I have all the green onions I can use, and they stay green under the snow all winter. Perfect for anyone trying to grow cold hearty crops in cold frames or hoop houses through the winter.
Love them! So full of character!
