Sweetgrass

Hierochloe odorata. Known for its sweet scent, which gets stronger after a rain or when the grass is burned. Best harvest time is late June to early July. Harvest by cutting the strands (not pulling on them) and dry the leaves lying flat. Once dry, they can be used for braiding, basketry, smudging, flavouring food and drink, and perfuming closets. Did you know? The Polish Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka is made with sweetgrass! If using for cooking, only use sparingly, as the plant’s active ingredients can cause liver damage.

The plant has a strong root system, forms sod, and is a fantastic choice for erosion control. Plant in moist to wet areas, in full sun or partial shade. Due to prolific rhizome growth, it can become aggressive!
