Hippophae rhamnoides. These small trees (~10-15 ft tall) produce an immense abundance of bright-orange, deliciously citrusy fruit in the fall. The trees are gorgeous to look at during berry season, with their silver foliage and masses of orange berries covering the branches. The berries are known to be packed in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, and more.

These trees are nitrogen fixers, which means that they can thrive on soils that are low in fertility. In fact, they will help feed other trees around them as well! Note that for sea buckthorn, "thriving" also means spreading through root suckers, so make sure to mow around the trees once a year to prevent a thorny thicket from forming.

A male tree is required for pollination; a single male can pollinate up to 7 female trees. Pollination is wind-based, and distance between male and female trees is critical, as planting the male too far from the females would reduce or even prevent pollination. Plant within 30 ft for best results.
