Allium schoenoprasum. A highly ornamental, perennial herb, hardy to zone 3, with edible leaves and flowers. Chives grow in clumps, spreading slowly outwards. Plants are tolerant of a wide range of soils, but prefer loose, fertile soil. One of the earliest greens to appear in the spring, very easy to grow, requires minimal to no care. Leaves can be harvested as needed - simply cut the amount needed to the base of the stem, and the plant will regrow the leaves.
Full of vitamins A and C, they can be used as a green onion replacement, or added to any savoury dish. Flowers have a stronger onion/garlic flavour than the leaves, and are great as garnish in soup bowls, toasts, or potato salad.
