Canada plum

Prunus nigra. A species native to Canada and NB in particular, this tree is most often used as a pollinator for other plum trees (Japanese and American/Japanese hybrid plums). It also produces (small) plums that make great jams and jellies, and it can even be used as a rootstock for plums.

Hardy to zone 2, this small tree grows to 15 ft tall, and puts on a show of a profusion of beautiful flowers in the spring. It spreads via suckers, and between the medium size, the spreading habit and the occasional thorns, it is a fantastic choice for a hedge plant.
